2012 The News Movie

Plot of 2012 movie :

In 2009, American geologist Adrian Helmsley meets with Doctor Satnam Tsurutani in India. Satnam has discovered that a high concentration of neutrinos from the largest solar flares in recorded history are acting as microwaves, causing the temperature of the Earth's core to increase rapidly. Adrian informs White House Chief of Staff Carl Anheuser and US President Thomas Wilson that this will instigate a catastrophic chain of natural disasters. At the G8 summit in 2010, other heads of state and heads of government are informed of the situation. They begin a secret project intended to ensure humanity survives, choosing 400,000 people to board a series of large ships to be constructed in the Himalayas. To help fund the venture, additional individuals are allowed to purchase tickets for one billion euros apiece.

In 2012, Jackson Curtis (John Cusack) is a writer in Los Angeles who works part-time as a limousine driver for wealthy Russian businessman Yuri Karpov. Jackson's ex-wife Kate (Amanda Peet) and their children Noah and Lily live with her boyfriend, plastic surgeon and amateur pilot Gordon Silberman. Jackson takes Noah and Lily camping in Yellowstone National Park, where they meet Charlie Frost, a conspiracy theorist living as a hermit and hosting a radio show from the park. Charlie believes a theory that suggests the Mayans predicted the world would come to an end in 2012, and claims he has knowledge of a secret "space ship" project and possesses a map of the ships' location. The family returns home as cracks develop along the San Andreas Fault in California and earthquakes occur in the San Francisco Bay area. After being informed by Yuri's twin sons that they have tickets for a special ship while he will die, Jackson grows suspicious and rents a plane to rescue his family. He collects his family and Gordon when the Earth's crust displacement begins and they escape Los Angeles as it collapses into the Pacific Ocean.

As millions die due to worldwide earthquakes, the group flies to Yellowstone to retrieve Charlie's map, and narrowly escapes as the Yellowstone Caldera erupts. Charlie, who stayed behind to broadcast the eruption, is killed by the blast. Learning the ships are in China, the group lands in Las Vegas along with other travellers, where they meet Yuri, his sons, girlfriend Tamara, and pilot Sasha. They join the group and secure an Antonov An-225, fleeing Las Vegas as it is destroyed. The group flies to China, passing Hawaii as it is obliterated by volcanic eruptions. Also bound for the ships aboard Air Force One are Anheuser, Adrian, and First Daughter Laura Wilson. President Wilson remains in Washington D.C. and is killed by a giant tsunami. With the Vice President presumed dead and the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives missing, Anheuser appoints himself acting president.

Arriving in China in a crash-landing that kills Sasha, Yuri and his sons are taken to the ships, stranding the Curtis family, Gordon and Tamara, who do not possess tickets. Leaving the crash site, the group is picked up by Nima, a Buddhist monk. They sneak into an ark through its hydraulics chamber with the help of Nima's brother Tenzin, a welder for the ark project. Meanwhile, Satnam and his family are stranded in India after their airlift fails to arrive. In his last moments, Satnam calls Adrian, informing him that a 1500 meter high uncharted tsunami is engulfing India and heading towards the arks. Anheuser orders the arks sealed, trapping thousands outside. Adrian convinces the G8 leaders to let the remaining people board. As the ark's boarding gate is lowered and then raised, Yuri falls to his death getting his two sons aboard. Gordon falls into the gate mechanism and is killed, while Tenzin's drill becomes lodged in the gears, preventing the gates closing and rendering the ship unable to start its engines. The tsunami begins flooding the ark, setting it adrift and drowning Tamara. Jackson and Noah free the drill, enabling the crew to regain control of the ark, barely preventing a collision with Mount Everest.

27 days later, the floodwater from the tsunamis recedes, satellite data shows that Africa rose in relation to sea level, and the Drakensberg mountains in KwaZulu Natal are now the highest on the planet. As three arks set sail for the Cape of Good Hope, Jackson reconciles with his family and Adrian starts a relationship with Laura. The movie ends with a view of a geographically different Africa.

It's not without feeling some frustration that I learned that Spiderman 4 is being pushed back from 2009 to May 2011...

During a meeting with theater owners Spider-Man producer Laura Ziskin revealed that Spider Man 4 is tentatively scheduled in May 2011. Moreover the screenplay of Spiderman 4 is not even finished yet... And besides, neither Director Sam Raimi nor Actor Tobey Maguire is yet confirmed for this fourth movie installment of the Spider-Man franchise.

Why do they wait so long? Aren't they afraid of people loosing interest not only in Spiderman but more generally in the superhero genre if they wait too long?

Let's hope that Marvel and Sony will try to start the production of Spiderman 4 as soon as possible!

A first official teaser poster of Spiderman 4 has shown up online:

'2012 end of the world' Movie Review Trailer

he dialogue is atrocious and the 2012 storyline is just silly beyond belief. But, man, when writer/director Roland Emmerich puts aside the plot and just focuses on scenes of destruction, this thing is a real hoot. I don't think that, other than Zombieland and The Hangover, I've laughed this hard all year, although I'm sure the comedy in 2012 is 90% unintentional.

2012 should have been released during the summer as it's a check-your-brain-at-the-door, completely over-the-top, popcorn movie that delivers some of the most outlandish and entertaining scenes of devastation we've ever seen. This is Irwin Allen pumped up on steroids and loaded with Red Bull. I'm actually sad Roland Emmerich's decided to go with a smaller, more intimate tale for his next picture because I'd really love to see him try to top the sheer mass of effects and destruction he's accomplished with 2012.

The Story

I'm not a geologist nor do I play one on TV, so here's the plot in a nutshell. The sun's gone nuts causing the Earth's core to heat up, which in turn sets off a series of catastrophic events around the globe. Earthquakes cause massive amounts of devastation, stirring up tsunamis and sending - here we go for those people who aren't fans of the United States' west coast - California into the ocean. Inactive volcanoes come to life, and just about everything that can be destroyed is torn to bits or covered with ash, lava, debris, or water.

Just prior to and during all this destruction, Jackson Curtis (author of the prophetic Farewell Atlantis, played by John Cusack) learns from a crazy hermit radio show host (played as a gleefully deranged pickle-lover by Woody Harrelson) the Mayans were right when they predicted the world would end in 2012. Every world leader already knows this, and they've been secretly building ships to save 400,000 or so people when the final act does eventually play itself out. Jackson, of course, is not one of those chosen to be saved (i.e. he's not a billionaire), but he doesn't know that so he does his best to convince his ex-wife (Amanda Peet), their two kids, and his ex-wife's new plastic surgeon boyfriend (an absolutely terrific job of acting by writer/director Tom McCarthy) they need to get onboard a plane and get the heck out of Dodge.

The film then finds our hero, Jackson, making a series of moves that takes him and his motley crew from city to city, and ultimately to China, using a variety of transportation devices that all perform as though they were built by that guy who created all of Batman's cool toys.

The Bottom Line

2012 combines elements of The Poseidon Adventure, Earthquake, Titanic, Volcano and half a dozen other disaster films into one, huge, 158 minute assault on your brain. Analyzing the story, dissecting the dialogue, figuring out the logistics of how everything fit together and how all these strangers managed to be only one degree of separation from each other - despite not having anything in common - is a useless, futile effort. 2012 is what it is: a disaster epic with a monstrous effects budget in which character development comes secondary.

Despite Emmerich and his co-writer Harald Kloser's attempts at building up a foundation from which the audience will learn to appreciate and feel for the humans fighting for their lives, you seriously can not care about these people and will be rooting for more and more destruction. Bring on more earthquakes, tidal waves, and exploding volcanos! The less we see - and hear - of the central characters, in particular Danny Glover as the overly earnest U.S. President, the better. Who cares why John Cusack's not with his wife or that the Russian billionaire forced his gorgeous blonde girlfriend to buy bigger boobs? LA's falling into the sea, Sin City is being flattened casino by casino, and there's a dog in jeopardy!

This is not a message movie unless the message is only billionaires and very lucky authors can survive the apocalypse. What 2012 is, if you totally discard reality and logic, is a special effects extravaganza of epic proportions that, despite its overly long running time, is a great way to forget real life and just let your eyeballs absorb two hours of crashes, explosions, and huge scale natural disasters. And, yes, it's way too long. But the good thing is you can take a break whenever you need to because there is no real story you need to keep up with. Just time your exit to coincide with a dialogue scene and you'll be all the better for it.

GRADE: D for plot and dialogue, A for its awesome over-the-top effects, and overall a B- for being exactly what audiences will expect from it and nothing more.

2012 was directed by Roland Emmerich and is rated PG-13 for intense disaster sequences and some language.
